Auschwitz-Birkenau is a complex of three post-German concentration camps located on the territory of Oświęcim and Brzezinka ("Auschwitz" means in German Oświęcim, and "Birkenau" - Brzezinka). Initially in 1940 they were intended for the location of Poles. Later they were transformed into the place of extermination of Jews, Roms, Soviet captives and people representing other nations. Auschwitz-Birkenau is the only concentration camp listed by the UNESCO as the World Heritage Site.
